Global Touring Cars champs on Women’s Day

The inaugural SASOL Global Touring Cars championship will be staged on Women’s Day.

THE inaugural Sasol Global Touring Cars (GTC) championship will be staged on Women’s Day.

The Sasol GTC championship will be taking place at Zwartkops Raceway on Tuesday, August 9, and a day of pulse-racing, adrenaline-pumping excitement lies ahead for the 11 participating teams.

The Engen Volkswagen Cup competition will also take place on the same day.

To celebrate Women’s Day, instead of racing with the usual racing stickers, pink stickers and banners will be displayed.

“The Engen Volkswagen Cup series is fast approaching two decades of national competition in South Africa,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “In that time we’ve had several women competing in the series – like Robyn Kruger and Tasmin Pepper, the chairperson for the championship is Desiree Jacoby and the commentator is Lerryn Mew.”

“This doesn’t include the women involved with our championship, the mothers, sisters, girlfriends and wives who play a host of roles that make each race day possible.”

In recognition of and respect for the women involved in motor sport, the pink banners across the windscreen are a thank you from the Engen Volkswagen Cup series for everything they to do ensure racing takes place.

Racing is from 09:00 to 16:00. General admission tickets will be available at the gate for adults R100. Children under 12 are free.
