GLRU applauds juniors

The GLRU teams did exceptionally well during the school rugby weeks.

THE Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) is proud to announce the results of their various junior rugby teams in recent weeks which culminated in the u.18A side playing in the unofficial final of the Craven Week at Kearsney College on Saturday, July 16.

The GLRU u.12 side is ranked under the top three in the country while the u.13A side is in the top four.

The u.16 Grant Khomo side was also rated in the top four while the u.16B and C sides were unbeaten in their respective tournaments. The u.18 Academy side is also ranked in the top four.

The Craven Week sides met Western Province in the unofficial final on Saturday and the u.19 Welpie team is now ranked as one of the two best teams in the country.

This testament to the hard work behind the scenes where the names of Pieter Visser, manager of amateur rugby at the GLRU, Timmy Goodwin, manager of development as well as Bart Schoeman, manager of high performance must be mentioned.

The names of Tinus Diedericks, chairman of the Golden Lions High Schools Rugby Association and Chris Schutte, heading up the primary schools association, and their respective coaching staff also need to be mentioned and thanked for their hard work.

“We are so excited to see that our juniors are playing the same exciting brand of winning rugby and that they are enjoying it. We are working hard to ensure all our teams on all levels, from management to coaches, are equipped to be a successful Lions outfit. Lions play the Lions way,” said Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of the GLRU.

Kevin de Klerk, president of the Golden Lions, said he had the pleasure of being able to attend this year’s Craven Week at Kearsney College. “It was really a wonderful privilege to see how well our Lions sides played at this tournament. Some amazing talent was on display and it made me immensely proud to watch our sides perform so well.

“I applaud our coaches, medical staff and all assistant staff for their excellent input, which has put us among the top of all our different categories. On average we are the top union in all our teams across the board,” de Klerk said.
