Athletes run gruelling race in the South

Jackie Gibson marathon a great success.

CONSIDERED one of the most grueling marathons in South Africa, the Jackie Gibson marathon was once again held in the South.

The 71st Jackie Gibson and the fourth Alan Ferguson marathon were held on Sunday, April 3, and successfully hosted by Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club. The start and finish was at the Klipriversberg Recreation Centre.

The men’s race was won by Steven Dikobo and Salome Cooper won the women’s race. The half marathon men’s race was won by Felex Rop and the women’s race by Mpho Mabuza.

Some 2 500 athletes participated in the oldest marathon in South Africa which saw an increase in the number of runners. The popular race goes through southern suburbs and includes the scenic Klipriversberg Nature Reserve. This race forms part and parcel of one of the qualifying and training marathons for the Comrades Marathon.

Steel Wings Harley Davidson Midvaal Bikers Club welcomed the runners crossing the line. Johan Visser, chairman of Johannesburg Harriers, said: “We express our gratitude to all the volunteers from the club who made it happen.”

The 2017 Jackie Gibson and Alan Ferguson marathons will incorporate a 10km event for the first time. The race will take place on Sunday, April 2, 2017.
