Masters champs around the corner

Big names have entered the championships including Shaun Bownes (45), a well-known hurdler, who won a silver medal in 2014 in the World Indoors Championships in the 60m hurdles.

TOP masters athletes are set to compete in the Central Gauteng Masters Athletics Championships which will take place on April 9 at the Germiston Stadium from 06:30 to 17:00.

Some 250 entries from Central Gauteng and seven other provinces – Gauteng North, Free State, Central North West, North West North, Vaal Triangle, and as far afield as KZN and South Western Districts – will compete at the event.

Big names have entered the championships including Shaun Bownes (45), a well-known hurdler, who won a silver medal in 2014 in the World Indoors Championship in the 60m hurdles, as well as in the World Outdoors Championship last year in the 110m hurdles.

Chris Harmse (43), who still holds the South African record in the hammerthrow, will also be in action.

Many of the entrants have competed, and medalled at various world championships and hold numerous South African age group records in their respective events. Monty Hacker (81) won a gold medal in the 100m sprints in Lyon, France this year.

Salome Vermeulen will be competing in a brand new age group (50) and will be aiming to add two more national records to her list in the 800m and 1 500m. She already holds two SA records in the 45 age group. Many of the entrants who have joined masters after their senior days, rank amongst the top masters in the world.
