Junior athletes show class

CGA championships a great success.

ATHLETES turned out in numbers to make the Central Gauteng Athletics Sub-Youth, Youth, Junior and U.23 Championships, on Saturday, March 12, a great success.

Spectators filled up the Germiston Stadium early in the day, and athletes were determined to perform to their utmost best to make the provincial team, which will be competing later this month at the national championships.

Exceptional performances were recorded by CGA’s top athletes in both track and field, including the new kid on the block, Cheswell Johnson (19), who has done remarkably well for himself in the 100m and long jump.

Johnson has recently moved to the University of Johannesburg Athletics Club, from Alberton Athletics Club, having been a member of the athletics fraternity for less than a year. He currently holds a personal best of 7.45m in long jump and had a jump of 7.13m this past weekend.

Johnson, with his great potential, aims to compete in the World Junior Athletics Championships later this year.

Another highlight of the day was the 53:19.34 of Pierre Vermaak in the 10 000m walk event. Vermaak is one of the most promising junior walkers in the province and continues to work towards his late father’s dream of him becoming the world champion in race walking.
