Giant weekend of pro-am boxing in South

Southern Giant boxing weekend: Two days of amateur and professional boxing bouts.

THE annual Southern Giant boxing tournament has grown in stature and will be hosted over two days in November.

On Friday, November 6, a professional Box ’n Dine will be held with an international flavour. Saturday, November 7, will see the amateurs battle it out in the ring. Five boxers from Durham County will take on the powerful local contingent.

Hunter Fitment Centre saw the value in the event and has come forward as main sponsor. Well known owner, Lionel Hunter, is a former boxer and has given his support for the event which started back in 2001.

Box ’n Dine will feature Rofhiwa Maema and Bongani Siwisa in a Gauteng title fight. Clement Kamanga from the Congo will take on unbeaten Jeff Saunders from Durham County. Saunders is a rising star from England and will be displaying his boxing skills against Kamanga who recently turned professional.

The professional undercard will feature a stack of rematches. Bheki Mahlangu will take on Tyrone Murgatroyd in the junior-lightweight division. Fiston Kabamba will face Jade Karam in the light heavyweight division and Leron Miles will weigh up against Lewis Bukasa in the light heavyweight division.

Other bouts are: Percy Makhize vs Gift Pooe, Siya Mabena vs Gift Bolo, Michael Mokoena vs Oupa Mangena, Osborne Machimane and Justice Salinga’s opponents will be announced in due course.

The amateur event will see some of the finest boxers in the South and surrounding clubs show their potential. This includes the likes of Troy de Paiva vs T Heilbron from Durham, Sacha Thesner vs J Archer from Durham, Ricky Tshabalala vs D Clement from Durham, D Ross vs Tyrone Hall, Warren le Roux vs D Araujo and Tino Perestrelo vs Louis Malajika.
