Southerners hold their own in sport, dancing

Akayla and Miguel Franco-Green have grown and worked so hard at their dancing and horse riding.

SIBLING sporting duo, Akayla and Miguel Franco-Green excel in both dancing and horse riding.

The brother and sister have been accepted into the South African dance team and will represent South Africa in New York next year.

Akayla has also been included in the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) Gauteng equestrian show jumping team. She has been selected for the Sedibeng A-team in all four of her show jumping classes, achieving three first places, four second places, four fourth places and three fifth place rosettes, as well as a whopping eight best turned out awards, earning her two sets of full Sedibeng colours.

Akayla will also compete in the national championships on October 9 as part of the Gauteng 70cm ideal time A-team.

Miguel received his South African colours in ballet last year and again took part in the Dance Masters Association of South Africa (DMASA) regional championship this year earning his Gauteng colours in ballet and modern dance.

Akayla earned her Gauteng colours in contemporary dance and both siblings competed in the national championships earning their South African colours in all three dance disciplines.

Over and above their exceptional sporting achievements at a regional and national level, Miguel received 90 percent and above for his groups, duets and solos in 11 out of his 12 dances in the Alberton Eisteddfod this year and an amazing 100 percent for his contemporary group, Elastic Heart, and duet with one of his dance partners, Chloe Oosthuizen. Akayla also earned 90 percent for her ballet character solo as well as 96 percent for her duet with Miguel.

Miguel has been accepted into the prestigious Jozi Youth Dance Company and his first public performance with the company will be at the Boma Barnyard on November 29.
