Varsity rugby takes interesting turn

On the local side, UJ has met their nemesis and in a heartbreak result lost with a single point. The saying goes that the game is never over until the whistle blows.

That is proven by the fact the FNB UJ lost their concentration in the dying minutes of the match and lost to Maties 15-16.

Two tries in the second half saw FNB Maties come out tops against FNB UJ, when the two teams took each other on in Stellenbosch on Monday night March 9. The win handed Maties their first victory of the campaign and will bring a sense of relief to Stellenbosch as they ended a four-match winless run. It was UJ’s second defeat of the campaign, but the team managed to pick up a losing bonus point.

Pukke 21-40 UCT

FNB UCT-Ikeys claimed a nail-biting 40-21 victory over FNB NWU-Pukke in the FNB Varsity Cup, presented by Steinhoff International in Potchefstroom in what was a repeat of the 2014 final. A Jason Klaasen hat trick proved vital as the Cape side claimed their third victory of the competition to launch them into third place of the log and relegate their opponents down to fifth.

Shimals 23-21 NMMU

A late penalty saw FNB UFS-Shimlas claim a dramatic 23-21 victory over FNB NMMU in Port Elizabeth and extend their unbeaten run in the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International. The home side fought back bravely in the second half to level matters at 21-21, but had their hearts broken at the death as the Free State side walked away with the spoils.

Tuks 63-8 CUT

FNB CUT continued to struggle in their first season in Varsity Cup, when they were hammered by Tuks in Pretoria on Monday night. The two-time champions outscored the Ixias by nine tries to one, to hand the Free State side another heavy defeat in what is turning out to be a very tough debut season for the newcomers.

Varsity Shield:

FNB Wits thrashed FNB Fort Hare 93-0, while FNB UKZN went to the top of the Varsity Shield log after beating FNB Tut 41-66.
