TURFFONTEIN Racecourse’s much anticipated Night Racing season returns on Tuesday October 28. The season kicks off with a fantastic card of races including the Grade 3 Yellowwood Handicap for fillies and mares over 1 800m and the Listed Java Handicap over 2 450m.

There really is something special about night racing meetings and the first meeting of the season is set to be a cracker. Turffontein’s City Decks are the ideal place to take in the thrill of the thoroughbreds, while Joburg’s CBD provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxed evening out.

In celebration of the opening of the season, Turffontein Racecourse will be offering a dinner special which includes a traditional lamb on the spit with accompaniments for only R100 per person. Gentle music will be performed live between the races and a special behind the scenes tour of the racecourse can be booked at no charge when making your dinner reservation.

The first night meeting of the season will also play host to the media launch of the Racing. It’s a Rush International Jockeys’ Challenge, which takes places on November 15 and 16 in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively. This series is a highlight on the calendar and sees South Africa’s top jockeys take on a formidable team of international jockeys.

Being three months into the Highveld season with the forgiving ground and the darkness of the track also makes it a good meeting for trainers to introduce or step up the programmes of their better youngsters. Therefore the three Maiden Plates scheduled on the card are likely to reveal some exciting potential.

The Night Racing season extends into the warm summer months of 2015, while the dates to diarise for this year’s meetings are: December 16 and 30.
