Gauteng School Sport Awards winners
School children received their awards for their efforts during the 2013 season.
JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg based Troyeville Primary School tasted the most success at the revived Gauteng School Sport Awards on Friday February 21, scooping three awards in different categories as the event to honour tomorrow’s champions made a return after an 11 year hiatus, last held in 2002.
The awards, which have been themed Celebrating Today’s Stars, Tomorrow’s Champions, were held at Birchwood Hotel in Ekurhuleni. Troyeville Primary’s volleyball team walked off with the honour of Team of the Year after an excellent season in 2013, and also produced two individual winners in Nkosinathi Moyo (Coach of the Year) and Dalane Dube (Primary School Male Athlete of the Year).
Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Lebogang Maile said he was pleased with the strides made to move school sport forward despite the challenges. Maile has long endorsed the reintroduction of the awards as an important feat in ensuring that school sport is once again structured as the breeding ground of tomorrow’s champions.
Maile also added: “Part of our plan is to ensure that we mobilise all sectors of society to develop infrastructure for sport and avail resources for sustainable programmes like the running of leagues, provision of equipment and attire for athletes, as well as ensuring that we have adequately skilled officials and leaders to run our school sport.”
