Wemmer victorious at VLC

Masters winning the trophy.

A JUBILANT Wemmer Pan Rowing Club took home the Masters club trophy for the 107th annual VLC regatta at the conclusion of a closely fought two days on Sunday January 26.

A solid performance by all 17 Wemmer senior and Masters crews clinched the club its victory. The Masters women’s second division quad won their event. The Masters mixed second division double came second, as did the Masters women’s second division coxed octuplet and the Masters men’s first division coxed eight. Third places were gained by the Masters first division double, the Masters first division men’s coxless quad and the Masters first division coxed eight.

Wemmer Pan club captain Elra de Jager said, “Well done to all the crews for collecting so many medals and ultimately the Masters club trophy. Excellent efforts!”

The Wemmer Pan Rowing club’s current performance bears witness to the success of the club’s “Learn to Row” programme. Many of the rowers in the medalling crews have been rowing for two years at most and are products of the “Learn to Row” programme.

This active club also has a junior development section that offers coaching to school learners and students. This is in addition to its collaboration with and mentorship of the Soweto Rowing Club.

The club will be running its annual winter rowing clinic during the July school holidays. This is an excellent opportunity for young and old to take to the water and see what rowing is all about.
