Joubert back with vengeance

Warren Joubert back in the ring.

JOHANNESBURG – After eleven months layoff, Warren Joubert came back with vengeance to the ring demolishing his opponent Master Mangalaza over eight rounds.

Boxing Explosion tournament was held on Thursday October 31 at Big Top Arena, Carnival City. The venue is well known for hosting some of the biggest tournaments in South Africa such as the Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman fight which drew a full house.

Joubert beat the ever back-pedalling Mandaladz, who had won only two of his previous ten fights, on a unanimous point’s decision by the judges of 78/74, 79/73, 77/75 in the junior-welter weight division. Joubert broke his ankle in his last fight and recovered well to show that he still has some fighting power left.

“Warren has to win this, as we need to plan title fights for him in the future,” said trainer/manager Manny Fernandes from BRD Boxing Academy. Fernandes was the promotor of the well organised.

Joubert improved his professional record to 19-3-5, including 11 knockouts. Mangaladzi now stands at 2-8-1; 1.

In the much anticipated grudge fight of the evening, Jarred Silverman made his intentions clear in the ring and outboxed the promising Stone van Aswegen over eight. Silverman now box from out the Nick Durandt stable and has shown maturity in his boxing skills.

Dowayne Combrink from Alberton over powered his opponent, Daddy Mpinga, by a first round KO 1:18. Combrink did not get much opposition from Mpinga in the middleweight contest.

Another up and coming boxer in the cruiserweight division, Deon Coetzee, managed to do enough to win his fight against Jean Lutete. He won the six rounder by a split decision from the judges 57/57, 59/55, 59/55.

Other results: Junior middleweight: Stanis Kulondi beat Vusi Bilankulu on split decision over four rounds 39/37, 37/39, 39/38 .

Super middleweight: Walter Dlamini beat Hansen Baloyi on points over six rounds 59/55, 58/56, 58/56.
