Preserving memories of boxing history

At a special occasion, during the middle of October, spearheaded by East Rand Veterans Boxing Association, a part of the history of boxing was preserved for the future.

ALBERTON – The event took place in the form of a function organized by Willie Stols and Steve Groeneveld, to present Steve Groeneveld, (father) for a proposed sport museum at Helpmekaar College (formerly known as HoĂ«rskool Helpmekaar), memorabilia of Stoffel Steyn, brother of Gert and Andries Steyn, all alumni of Helpmekaar.

Another Helpmekaar boxer, the late 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki Springbok Len von Grenevitz, his son and wife Len junior and Marion von Grenevitz, also presented his memorabilia to the museum. Steve’s Brother Dick, a former show-jumping Springbok and former world boxing champion Piet Crous, as well as committee members of the East Rand Veterans Boxing Association graced the memorable afternoon with their presence.

Piet Crous represented Danie Ludick , from the well-known Ludick boxing family, who assisted with the gathering of memorabilia. The significance for Alberton in this historic venture lies in the fact that many Alberton sportsmen studied at Helpmekaar and their achievements will form part of that museum. Alberton sportsmen or women, who may be interested in donating memorabilia to the museum, are welcome to contact Steve Groeneveld through Alberton contact person Willie Stols 083 632 4233.
