Local life coach offers self-care guidelines

Brackendowns life coach Yolanda Dannatt offers coping and self-care guidelines for teenagers and young adults in the community.

There is a lot of pressure on us as humans, but especially the young ones, to have life figured out by the time they turn 18.

Remember the older generation grew up in different circumstances than you and they had to figure out how to earn money fast or go get food from the dustbin.

The older generation is tougher and more resilient because they did not have parents to sort things out for them or even encourage them in many ways. They were left to fend for themselves and most of them survived to tell the story.

Very high precedence is set for the younger generation and you will never experience the same thing, so don’t even try to compete with them.

Currently you, on the other hand, may have grown up or are growing up in a world where your biggest worries are ‘am I too skinny, am I too fat, my shoes are not brand named, so I get teased at school, I am too short, I am too tall, I don’t fit in with the crowd, I am clever so I must be a nerd, I have learning difficulties so I won’t amount to anything, I am too quiet, I am too loud. I don’t have a high-paying job, so I can’t compete with my peers, why should I bother to work at all?’

Main statement; ‘life is short I need to get everything I want before it’s too late’.

Guess what? Life is short, so you need to stop and smell the flowers along the journey. Your looks and clothes will not get you any further than the next guy. Those that are judging you have challenges of their own and so they take it out on you because, ‘if I make you feel bad, I feel better about myself’.

Divorce has become the norm, so juggling between two homes is not easy and difficult for all in the transition. You have to go through struggles to find your purpose. Everyone has them or we would all be empty shells.

But to make it easy, here are some examples

Parents seek someone to talk to, to help them cope with their teenagers. Your hurt and your self-esteem problems are real, acknowledge them.

Don’t suffer in silence, Seek help immediately, even if it’s just a private and confidential conversation about how you’re feeling, it can make a world of difference.

Do try to get yourself in the right direction for your line of work, but take baby steps, we all had to learn to crawl before we could walk.

Yes, life is short but is not a race. Let’s try enjoying the simple things again. Let me help you build your confidence and find the meaning and purpose for your life.
