Keep your attitude in check

Take the unfortunate situation and turn it around to be positive.

Your attitude will always determine your altitude! This expression is not seasonal nor occasional, it stays the same all the time.

In psychology, there’s a phenomenon called reappraisal or reframing which means changing the unhelpful meaning you have attached to a potentially sad/frustrating situation to a positive meaning to help yourself look and go beyond that situation, rather than being a victim.

Simply, this is about adjusting your attitude. It’s about moving from victimhood to victor-hood!

An example of this situation may be losing your job. You see, losing a job is scary as we mostly don’t see how we can provide for our families, especially in a short term.

The thought of losing a job floods your brain with negative and scary outcomes like your children getting kicked out of school, and losing your house and car. Our brains are wired through human evolution to be so overly sensitive towards unfavourable situations and this phenomenon is called negativity bias.

The truth is we cannot change the events of life but we have the power to change the meaning we attach to these events and ultimately change our responses towards them.

Losing a job is something real and we can’t stop it from happening, but we may change the meaning we attached to it. Instead of thinking about losing as the end of the world, losing your status and material possessions, you instead attach a meaning of, “Oh well, this unfortunate event presents me with an opportunity for something new, different and better!”

This helps you focus on, “What else can I do?” When the brain is directed towards this question, it releases creative juices, energy, and motivation towards finding the solution. Don’t focus on the loss but on the opportunity gained.
