The Bag Lady

Check out how to make your bedroom serene and relaxing.

Is it winter or is it spring? One minute I’m hot the next cold. Oh well, we can’t do anything about the weather but I am looking forward to settled “hot” weather with rain in between 1am and 4am. Wouldn’t that be perfect?

Dreamy bedroom

For me, a relaxing and tranquil bedroom is an absolute must and one thing it shouldn’t have is a TV.

I know many people will argue the fact but the truth is a bedroom is for relaxing and watching TV is certainly not restful, well mostly, anyway.

TV has become a huge part of our lives and I agree sometimes it would be lovely to wind down with a romantic movie. If you absolutely must have a TV in your bedroom, hide it away in a cupboard.

Choose soothing colours for the walls, ice white can look good on one wall but I wouldn’t recommend it for the whole room. It could look rather clinical.

Rather go for muted colours. Duck egg blue on a feature wall still looks lovely, or a pale rose pink if pinks are your colours. Greens, especially pale shades, can also look fantastic with light grey.

Or go for a very pale grey and a slightly darker grey. These colours really does match with most other colours.

Flooring can be in wood or soft carpet but I’m not a lover of tiles in a bedroom unless they are warm underfoot and I’d definitely never choose white tiles. They just look too cold.

White linen is gorgeous, or mostly white with a slight embroidery or muted colours on white. It always looks crisp and clean and you can accessorise easily by bringing out one of the colours in a cushion or throw.

Accessories

A throw at the bottom of the bed is always a good idea. Some evenings are warm when we go to bed but during the night the temperature drops a few degrees. Having a throw at the bottom of the bed can easily be pulled over you.

Bedside lamps are quite literally something I can’t live without. If you are a reader, like me, a decent lamp with a higher lamp stand will work as the light will throw onto your reading material. I also love the serene light a lamp gives. Anything too bright just doesn’t work.

Faux plants in ceramic holders or faux flowers in a stunning glass vase will work, as well as other decorative accessories. Try and keep your colours matching apart from a pop of colour if you want something to stand out.

Stores where you’ll find gorgeous bedroom items

Woolworths has some beautiful new duvet covers and accessories in-store now, as well as @HomeLiving Space, which also stocks beautiful lamps. MRPHome is definitely the place to shop for inexpensive duvet inners and covers and they also have quite a good range of bedroom accessories.

Studio 19

Our tranquil bedroom. You can see my Studio 19 cushion on the bed.

My daughter Tanya, before she moved oversees, worked for Studio 19, which is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Joburg and before she left I was privileged to receive a few gorgeous gifts from her which she had purchased from Studio 19.

Passionate about what they do, the owner Mia Widlake says, “We love what we do so much that it regularly keeps us awake at night. How to make things better and more useful, how to make space work better for the people who are going to spend time there. It’s not always about how we want something to look, it’s always about how it makes our clients feel.”

A cushion from Studio 19 graces the bed.

They really have some fantastic designs, some very contemporary, in accessories as well as furniture and if you are looking for that extra special wow piece, contact them on 010 023 0071.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
