The Bag Lady

Father’s Day is coming up next Sunday and I’m sure many of you are trying to find that perfect gift for dad.

This week’s blog should have had a dessert to die for – well with the week I’ve had, I feel like I’m dead! I haven’t had time to make the dessert I had in mind but hopefully, I’ll make it soon and share it with you.

Father’s Day is coming up next Sunday and I’m sure many of you are trying to find that perfect gift for dad.

With the economy hitting an all-time low, every rand will count but honestly, there are some lovely gift ideas which won’t break the bank.

The sweetest feeling

For the most delicious biscuits, iced to absolute perfection, you can’t beat the biscuits made by Mariesel de koker.

She bakes and ices individual biscuits and you can choose from beer mugs at R25 to ties also R25 each, as well as little packets of three special biscuits for just R15. Or if you would prefer you can order a gift box of the most delectable biscuit assortment for R75. Phone her on 082 372 5700 and place your order in time for Father’s Day. Having a family breakfast or lunch, well at R15 you can give each dad a packet of biscuits on the table. Now, how nice will that be!

For dads who like chocolate, there are just so many delicious assortments and I think one of my favourites is salted caramel chocolate or lime and chilli, yummy! If he enjoys a bottle of red wine, pair it with a bar of chocolate and gift wrap together in cellophane, tied with ribbon or string.

Green fingers

Not the best time of the year for planting now but how about a book on gardening or how to plan a new garden. He’ll be able to relax and read it through the colder months and be ready to put his new gardening plans into action when September arrives.

Or make up an interesting hamper of gardening gloves, seeds to plant in spring, secateurs, and a Garden & Home magazine. You can put it all together in a basket or wooden box.

Time for a movie

Buy him movie tickets or how about one of his favourite TV programme series. Great to re-watch time and again.

Book lover

If you know exactly what he enjoys reading, buy him a book. Otherwise, a book voucher is a safer option and maybe a bookmark to go with it.

Dining out

If you are planning in treating dad to breakfast or lunch out, there are some fabulous restaurants close at hand. If you haven’t already booked I’d advise you to book as soon as possible. My favourites are Turn ‘n Tender in Comaro View Shopping Centre, Bassonia, @The Courtyard (used to be Vera Vita) in Haddon and for a more relaxed lunch with fantastic craft beers, wines, gins, etc and delicious pub grub, you can’t beat The Green (next to Glenvista Country Club), Vorster Avenue, Glenvista. The views are fantastic, the atmosphere relaxed and service and food great.

Bouquet of the week

A reader mislaid her reading glasses and couldn’t remember what she’d done with them. “I had an idea I could have left them in Woolworths in Comaro View Shopping Centre but never thought I’d get them back. I phoned and spoke to a very polite woman at the store who said she’d go and check if they had been handed in. Guess what, they had! Thank you to whoever found them, I really appreciate it.”

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
