What wonderful weather we have been enjoying, rather like beautiful spring days, obviously apart from the chilly early mornings and evenings.
A walk in the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve made a great morning last week. What natural beauty we have right here on our doorstep and such interesting things to see, including the old Marais Farmhouse, the family graveyard, as well as some natural ruins and if you are lucky zebra, wildebeest, horses and dassies. Such calm, and only about 8kms from the centre of Joburg. There are short hikes and longer ones, which are well signposted so you won’t get lost. If you still haven’t taken a walk through the nature reserve, it really is a must do, and it’s totally free.
Take pride in what you do
The other day I was in a store and bought four items, 2kg pack of potatoes, a bottle of wine, an avocado and a loaf of bread, oh and a carrier bag. I’d forgotten my own shopping bag. Now, if you were packing the bag what would you put in first? Me? Well, I’d put the potatoes first, then the wine, then the bread and avocado. Makes sense don’t you think? Well, obviously not to the packer. In went the bread, the avocado, the potatoes and wine! Consequently, the loaf of bread was flattened on the one side. When I asked the packer what she was thinking, she just looked at me blankly. I then proceeded to show her how to pack the items properly. A job is a job, whether you are a CEO of a company, a refuse collector, a journalist or a packer. Take pride in what you do. You may find your job becomes more enjoyable.
Sales galore
Many stores are having sales again, just shows you how many items aren’t flying off the shelves and hangers. Woolworths has different clothing items on sale each week, usually with 30 per cent off. You can really score, especially if you keep a look out and wait to buy the certain item you want at this specific time. I see many other stores are also having sales and one of my favourites, Poetry (Mall of the South), is too.
Watch your Rands
With rising food, petrol, electricity costs, etc, make sure to check the grocery pamphlets in our newspapers. Each week I sit with a pen and paper and go through each one writing down the items I need and where they are the cheapest. Remember, Checkers has 50 per cent off many of its sell-by date perishable food (fruit, vegetables, pastries, convenience foods) every day. Look out for the yellow 50 per cent off stickers. Pick n Pay also marks down perishable fruits, veggies etc on the sell-by date. And keep a look out at Woolworths food stores for its 30 per cent off some meats on the sell-by date. Shop wisely and save money.
Bouquet of the Week
A huge thanks to the staff at Sassa at 1 De Villiers Street, Central Joburg from Pat Kostner. “Me and my friends went along there on Saturday, June 16 to get our new Sassa cards organised and the staff were really great, very friendly and professional and the waiting time was minimal. As far as I know they are open on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of September. Best just check though before you go.”
