The Bag Lady

We all said gifts are not necessary really but we did agree with her that most parents say, “No, don’t worry about a gift”, but deep down they would probably be upset if they didn’t receive something, albeit tiny.

After my Bag Lady last week, I was phoned by a friend of mine from many years ago who said she had a gripe with customer service too.

“I visited a shop in Bracken Gardens last week where groceries are sold and was absolutely disgusted by the service I received. I did complain to the store manager who went with me to the shop assistant, who was asked to apologise to me, which she did. Being treated badly by rude staff is certainly one of my pet hates and dare I say it happens weekly, in fact, daily if I go shopping. Service in South Africa, in general, is bad and when we do get good service it’s welcomed with such enthusiasm. To add insult to injury, my husband said the pastries I’d purchased from the store, were as stale as could be!”

More Father’s Day gift ideas

At one of our editorial meetings, one of our junior reporters expressed her distress.

“Oh, no it is Father’s Day soon and I’ll need to buy a gift. My budget for the month is already looking terrible.”

With this in mind, I’ve been thinking of gifts under R50, bearing in mind the gift wrap which often can cost more than a small gift. Forget a shop bought card, what will dad do with it anyway?

Wine can still be found for under R50 a bottle, some quite good ones too, check those special deals. Wrap the bottle in cellophane, scrunch at the top and tie with string or ribbon.

Nuts and biltong. Buy R30 biltong at a butcher (Meat World) and a packet of peanuts (about R15) and wrap in a piece of kitchen roll or cellophane tied with string or ribbon.

Chocolates and sweet gift pack. Visit Tasco, Pick n Pay or Checkers to get the best deals.

Make dad a card, write a caring verse, and attach a small chocolate to it. He’ll love it!

All too often we forget youngsters who are just beginning their careers and don’t earn a fortune, who also want to express their love for their dad.

So there you have a few ideas. Look carefully and you’ll find more inexpensive gifts. Good luck!

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
