The Bag Lady

I’ve discovered a little gem, The Steaming Mug, situated in Alberton Crossing, Alberton on the corner directly opposite McDonald’s.

How safe do you feel when you are driving in peak hour traffic and behind you is a motorist who is clearly texting and eating! This happened to me one morning last week at 7.10am while I was driving down Michelle Avenue in Meyersdal and yes, the driver was a woman!

Why she didn’t slam into the back of me, goodness knows. Every time I had to stop or slow down due to the traffic I held my breath in anticipation of the crash. As I stopped at the traffic lights, she proceeded to put down her breakfast and phone and began applying some kind of eye make-up. Talk about multi-tasking! What total, blatant irresponsible behaviour. I hate to admit it, but women really are the worst culprits when it comes to texting or chatting on phones whilst driving. Come on, ladies. I know you lead hectic lives what with full-time jobs, having to drop and fetch children and keep the home going, but your irresponsibility on the road could lead to someone being killed!

Pastel is the word

I am checking out the shops and am seeing gorgeous pastel colours coming in: mint greens, peaches, pinks, lemons, ice blues and lilacs. So beautiful! Lots of floaty designs too this season… Very romantic, so there’s no excuse not to look pretty this spring and summer. If you work in the corporate world you may prefer to wear a black, navy or grey skirt, but team it up with a stunning blouse or three-quarter-sleeve pale jersey. Prices are varied, depending on where you shop. I have noticed though that although there’s obviously a price increase, it is not too much from last year. Go on, treat yourself. if you don’t who will?

Perfect coffee shop

BUY THE PERFCT GIFT: Also choose from a selection of chutneys, jams and sauces, biscuits and rusks.

I’ve discovered a little gem -The Steaming Mug – situated in Alberton Crossing, Alberton on the corner directly opposite McDonald’s. Owned by Irene and Jean Tomes, The Steaming Mug opened in February this year and Irene said business is picking up weekly. This is hardly surprising when you see how beautifully quaint this coffee shop is and how friendly Irene and her staff are. The décor is vintage with a hint of country. I love the colours, namely duck egg blue with natural wood. There’s also a pretty outside area where you can sit and relax when the weather is warm.

They serve breakfasts and lunches which include toasted sandwiches, burgers, homemade hot meals such as bobotie with yellow rice, chutney and banana or chicken curry. They also have French toast with various delicious fillings (sweet and savoury), and divine desserts. Let me not forget to mention that they also have jaffles. The menu definitely lends itself to Afrikaans “kos” and has melkkos, pap and kaiings, mini melktert and koeksisters on offer which can be finished off with coffee and condensed milk! Takeaways are also available.

You’ll find beautiful, perfect gifts for women, for birthdays or as a special thank you! You can also choose from a selection of chutneys, jams and sauces, biscuits and rusks.

The Steaming Mug’s prices are very good and on a Wednesday pensioners can enjoy a free cup of coffee with a meal or a sweet something! it is open six days a week, Monday to Friday from7.30am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 7.30am to 3pm. Irene says baby showers, kitchen teas and small birthday parties are also catered for.
