The Bag Lady

H&M gets a big bouquet from Beverley; save by buying and preserving seasonal fruit and vegetables.

I trust you all enjoyed a beautiful Mother’s Day and were royally treated.

With petrol having recently gone up and food prices escalating, I do hope you are all looking for bargains and specials each week – you really can save money this way.

Seasonal buys

Try to buy fruit and vegetables which are in season. I love plums and a few weeks back they were very reasonably priced. I know some fruits don’t freeze very well so I stew the fruit and keep it in a big glass jar in the fridge. It keeps very well for a week or two. I stewed plums and fresh pears and apples all together and bottled them, and now I can enjoy natural yoghurt and stewed fruit for breakfast. Or I can make a delicious stewed fruit crumble and serve it with hot custard, ice cream or fresh cream.

With vegetables I often manage to buy the discounted food at Pick n Pay or Checkers and if I buy a big bag of tomatoes I cook them and make ice cube trays with the chopped cooked tomatoes – which is perfect for lasagne, bolognaise or pizza.

Bouquet of the week

Beverley gives a huge bouquet to H&M at the Mall of the South. “My phone was unfortunately stolen from my bag somewhere in the mall. I went to H&M on the off-chance someone might have handed the phone in as that was one of the stores I visited. Of course I was in a panic. A lady there (she turned out to be the manager by the name of Siviwe) was so helpful and kind that she immediately calmed my frazzled nerves. She went to check as soon as possible. She went so far as to say she would check the cameras to see if maybe she could see anything. This was without any request from me to do so. I found her manner so kind and sympathetic and she immediately made me feel better. In this day and age most people couldn’t care to be of assistance if it is not in their own interest. The security guard (Sonnyboy) was also most helpful. I would like to commend both publicly and tell their employers they have absolute stars working for them. My phone unfortunately wasn’t found.”

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
