The Bag Lady

It was a busy week, but there was a little time to look for beautiful gifts for moms for Mother's Day on May 14.

How many of you are finding goods in the shops just going up and up? Not only is the monthly shopping becoming far more expensive but buying clothing, eating out, entertainment, and just about everything we do is costing more.

With the country in junk status, I think we are only just beginning to feel the dreadful impact it’s going to have on us all. With this in mind we are all going to have to pull in our reins and cut back where we can.

Great sell-by date produce

I’m quite particular what we eat and I try to buy free-range meat, especially chicken. Woolworths have a great initiative where they sell some meat, especially free-range chicken, steak, boerewors and a few other meat lines, for 30 per cent off, on its sell-by date. You can certainly save if you buy these specials when they are available. They are often put out on the shelf after 2pm. Checkers and Pick n Pay, likewise, put out their fruit and vegetables every day when it’s reached its sell-by date, often after 4pm. Although there aren’t always marked-down goods, it could pay you to shop later in the day. Working women (or men) who pop into the shops on their way home could score!

Weekly specials

Check the newspaper inserts every week – Pick n Pay, Checkers, Woolworths and Spar – for great prices and if you can afford to, stock up on non-perishable goods, ie, long life milk, coffee, rice and all tinned goods. Always check their sell-by dates, though. The same goes for toilet rolls, washing powder, all cleaning products and toiletries. Both Clicks and Dis-Chem always have specials of some kind; you often buy two products and get one free. You’ll save quite a bit here.

Don’t fall into the trap, though, of buying for the sake of buying. If you don’t really use a product and buy it just because it’s selling at a special price, you won’t really be saving at all.

Clothing sales

Keep a lookout for sales at Woolworths (they also have ‘buy two, get three’ on a regular basis), but again only if you like the garment and will get wear out of it if you buy it in three different colours; Edgars, too, have good sales, as well as other clothing stores.

White sales

Boardmans is another store which offers great specials on bedding, duvets and towels. If you need any of these try to wait for their sales, as you’ll save lots.

Spoil your mom on Mother’s Day

Take a peek at Crystal Creations in Mall of the South. They have the most gorgeous crystal jewellery from R200 and handbags from R400. The service is always great here, friendly and helpful.

One of my favourite shops, L’Occitane, also in Mall of the South, has beautiful Mother’s Day boxed gifts. Three perfumed hand creams go for R390, a gorgeous floral bucket filled with products is priced at R300, and a Neroli and Orchidee gift set of 75ml eau de toilette, shower gel and body milk costs R1 200. Pop in and have a look at all the exquisite products.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
