It was with sadness I learnt Margaret Roberts passed away on March 4. Her knowledge of herbs was brilliant and I’ve visited her herbal centre (Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre) in De Wildt, Hartbeespoort Dam area, many times and have always enjoyed times spent there. The gardens were magnificent and boasted a wonderful herb nursery, tea garden, potager, shop, fairy gallery and a studio which manufactures potpourri, oils, creams, bath products and gourmet delights. Some of my own herbs have come from her centre and I also have books written by her. I also recall a Christmas Market Day she held there every year, where I always bought gorgeous gifts. Her daughter Sandy has said she’ll do her best to continue their work so her mother’s legacy can live on.
In 1993 a rose was named after her in recognition of her contribution to South Africa’s plant industry.
Rest in Peace, Maud
Only days after, Maud Pickup, a member of Johannesburg South Garden Club, passed away after a short illness.
Maud was chairman of the garden club for many years and her love of gardening, flowers, plants and trees made her very knowledgeable in the gardening world. Throughout her reign as chairman, she organised many guest speakers for the garden club and was always willing to go the extra mile. “We are saddened at the loss of Maud, she touched the hearts of many people and will be sorely missed,” added Mike Richardson, secretary of the Johannesburg South Garden Club.
She was also a member of local women’s groups, Eikenhof Women’s Institute and Circle of Friends.
“Maud was a valued and friendly member of WI and participated in all our competitions. She’s going to be sorely missed,” said Joy Boswell, president of Eikenhof WI.
Hilda Theck of Circle of Friends said, “She was such a wonderful member of our group and we are going to miss her enthusiasm and her bright and cheery ways.”
As well as a dear and loving family, Maud leaves behind so many friends who will miss her happy smile, her caring ways and her true friendship.
As for myself, I’ve known Maud for many years through going to cover the garden club news. I’ve grown to love the interesting club and many of its members, some of whom have become personal friends. I went to Stepping Stones Hospice in Alberton on Wednesday morning and managed to see Maud. I’d never been to the hospice before and I was so touched by the beauty and restfulness of it, as well as the caring and wonderful staff. I’ll miss you Maud.
Bouquet of the Week
To Leishers Upholsterers in Mulbarton Shopping Centre, a huge bouquet from Sheila Reeves, who lives in Mayfield Park. “I had my lounge suite recovered by them about two years ago and a short while back the beading on one of the cushions began to come away from the fabric. I contacted them (011 432 6414) and they sent someone out to have a look. I’d like to comment on how wonderful their workmanship is, as well as their after-sales service. Thank you for your fantastic service and professionalism, I’d recommend you to anyone.”
Although this week I’ve touched on sad news, I know you’ll forgive me and maybe you too knew of Margaret Roberts and was an acquaintance or friend of Maud. How sad that two such lovers of gardens died only days apart.
