The Bag Lady

This week I tasted the best Indian takeaway food I've ever had. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed I'm sure.

Nine weeks to Christmas… and counting! I get the feeling, speaking to readers and business people, that money is scarce this year and I’ll be out looking for gift ideas which won’t break the bank.

Everything is going up and food prices escalate weekly. Thank goodness some of the main food stores have great specials and you can certainly save if you keep an eye out for them.

A must try

Last week I visited Eastern Café in Rosettenville, an authentic Indian Takeaway, situated on the corner of Verona and Carter Street. It’s a family owned business, with Raj, Sarra and Rishlen Naidoo heading it. Previously it was situated in Main Street, Rosettenville, but moved to these new premises a few months ago.

I tasted the steak and cheese samoosas and they were absolutely delicious, but then I tried the “Durban Chow” and I couldn’t believe how good it was. Just like a proper Durban curry, but then Raj and Sarra cook with spices coming from Durban and Sarra, who is ”head chef”, certainly knows how to cook a fantastic curry!

You can choose from mutton, beef, chicken, mince and bean curries, served with rice or roti. They also sell bunny chows, roti wraps and specials, which are available mainly on a Friday. You’ll be in for a real treat as their chicken breyani is an absolute must try!

Apart from all their delicious Indian food, they also sell Chow Mein, burgers and pregos, toasted sandwiches and dagwoods. A new concept, Buy and Braai, is available, too.

What I absolutely loved about Eastern Café was the pristine cleanliness of the shop. I’m a real fusspot, but I wouldn’t hesitate to come here and buy the delicious food.

The prices are great and they do a free delivery service within a 10km radius on orders of more than R100.

Having a party? They also cater for all types of functions and prepare platters.

Open Monday to Thursday from 09:00 to 19:00, and Friday and Saturday from 09:00 to 20:00. Phone 011 037 0371 or 078 495 8617 to place an order or for more information.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
