That’s Life – local news

We all know how bad some drivers are and what havoc they cause on our roads and highways.

Yesterday, Monday July 20, I realised to my horror, many women drivers are culprits, but more so lots are mothers who are driving their children to school!

I was driving down Michelle Avenue towards Virgin Active in Meyersdal when a women driver very nearly hit me. It was about 07:15 and the woman was smoking, on her cell phone and had a child in the front seat who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and two children in the back, also with no seat belts. She had her phone tucked under her chin and the cigarette dangling in and out of her mouth. I could easily observe all of this as she swerved over into my lane and I had to slam on brakes so she wouldn’t hit me. I wanted to peep at her but I was worried this action would give her a fright and cause her to be a bigger problem.

Not only was she driving dangerously but she was breaking three laws! One – talking on her cell phone while driving; two – letting her children ride in the car without seatbelts and three – smoking in a car with children. Not too sure if this is an actual law, not being able to smoke in a vehicle while children are in the car, I know it’s an offence in many countries worldwide, and should most definitely be made law here too, if not already.

As I carried on driving along Jacqueline Avenue, another woman driver, again with children in the car without seatbelts, was trying to apply eye makeup!

Come on ladies, you love your children I’m sure but please don’t put their precious lives in danger as you drive them to school and home again. If you were involved in an accident it would most likely be your own fault and I can bet you would blame the other driver!
