The Bag Lady

Six weeks to Christmas…….. and counting!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, time is running away, and the shops are full of Christmas delights. My Christmas cake has had its first dribbling of brandy and has a delicious aroma.

Edgars is looking very festive and has lots of gold and silver in the clothing and shoe lines. I tried a pair of gold sandals on which are really gorgeous and for only R159 an absolute bargain! The heels were a little high for me but I’m still thinking of going back and buying them.  I know if I don’t, I’ll regret it!

Last week I checked out Christmas cakes and puddings at Woolworths and will take a look each week at different stores’ cakes and puddings and give you the prices so you can compare. Last year there really wasn’t much price difference between them, so it’s really a matter of your own personal choice.

I’ll also be looking at Christmas crackers and which are the best buy and of course I’ll be giving you Christmas gift ideas, from budget to more pricey.

Woolworths Christmas cakes

New lines – Christmas Cherry Liqueur cake, chocolate sponge made with cherry liqueur and enrobed in a rich chocolate coating topped with milk and dark chocolate shavings. Alternatively, Christmas Almond Liqueur Cake, vanilla flavoured sponge made with almond liqueur, covered with the same as the cherry cake. Both 530g, serve eight to ten, cost R89.95 each. I have to say they look divine and would make a change from a rich fruit cake, especially for those who don’t enjoy fruit cakes.

Iced Fruit Cake – 800g R89.95; Festive Fruit Cake – 700g R89.95; Iced Lightly Fruited Cake – 400g R44.95; Cherry Genoa – 700g R99.95 or 350g R59.95. Hand Decorated Iced Brandy Fruit Cake – one kg R149.95.

Woolworths Christmas puddings

Golden Brandy Christmas Pudding – 450g R99.95; Toffee Apple Christmas Pudding – 450g R89.95; Christmas Fruit Pudding – 450g R69.95; Brandy Christmas Pudding – 450g R79.95; Malva Christmas Pudding – 450g R89.95 or individual R24.95.

Focus on Local

Here’s one for the men. When was the last time you visited a tailor’s shop? I popped in at Main Tailors which is situated at 89 Main Street, Rosettenville and Harry Daya (owner) welcomed me into his small but well stocked shop, which he has had for 35 years. Here you can have clothing altered, repaired or have clothing made up from scratch. He has lots of fabrics to choose from or you can buy your own and bring it to him and his three assistants to make up. I loved his “old” measuring ruler, curved to make the job easier for measuring for trousers!  Repairs and alterations can often be done on the same day, which is wonderful service.

Harry Daya, Dumazile Mbuyane, Simon Kazembe and Bhavesh Tailor (and, yes, this is really his surname!)

“We’ve assisted generations of family members and they always return here. Many or our customers come from all over Gauteng because they feel they get a very personal service and great value for money,” said Harry. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 08:30 to 13:00. For more information you can phone 011 683 1506.
