The Bag Lady

Another busy week but thankfully, not too bad and yes, I have had a little time to browse the shops.

Aren’t you just loving all the summer clothing that is beginning to come into the stores? Whatever colour suits you, you’ll be sure to find it this season.

Pastels and brights

I see both pastel shades and bright colours are going to be huge this season, so whatever your taste you will find something suitable.  From mint greens, baby blues, peaches, lemons, pale pinks and lilacs, I just can’t wait!  My absolute favourite shop (apart from Woolies) has to be Forever New.

They have the most gorgeous designs, cuts and colours. A slight problem though, their sizes are small and they are a little pricey. But you know what they say? You get what you pay for.

New product

I always used to drink Rooibos and Chamomile tea and then I discovered Sleep Tight Chamomile Tea at Woolies. It’s 100 per cent chamomile flowers and nothing else. For 20 tea bags it’s around R20, I think. I have a cup last thing at night and I honestly feel I have been sleeping better.

Your August garden

August is often a windy month and we have already had a few windy days, and nights and we could also still get some cold weather. This month you can begin to plan your garden. Make sure all your standard plants and young trees are securely staked. Depending on the size of the tree, various ties can be used. Small trees can be secured with a wooden stake and you can use pantyhose or raffia but larger trees will need steel stakes and stronger ties. Make sure the ties are not too tight though, or else they will damage the bark. Put a layer of new mulch around the base of trees to protect their roots just in case of late frost.

Clear your garden of weeds, even those stubborn ones which grow in between paving. My courtyard looks like grass with all the little weeds sprouting up between the bricks!  Get the soil ready by adding lots of compost to the beds.

Give your lawns the spring treatment, mow well and rake to remove the old dead lawn. Feed with a lawn fertiliser and top with lawn dressing (topsoil). This only applies to Kikuyu.

Prune your rose trees right back. This will encourage a healthy new growth.

Garden centres

Visit your local garden centres for advice. You’ll find the garden centre assistants who wander around watering, etc, will usually be able to assist you and tell you what is best to plant this month.

That’s it for this week. Enjoy and shop till you drop.
