The Bag Lady

Dare I say, spring is on its way! What beautiful weather we have been having, quite balmy some days.

Just over four weeks and it’ll be officially spring! Getting dressed with layers of clothing takes far too much time in the morning. Won’t it be lovely to slip on underwear and just a dress, oh, and then a touch of perfume and some delicate jewellery. I can’t wait.

Oops

For all of you who fancied trying the pudding recipe I had in last week’s column, I hope you realised, I’d forgotten to add the sugar. If you had your wits about you, you would have seen something was wrong as I put in the method, cream butter and sugar? What sugar you may well have asked? Well, it should have 45ml (three tablespoons) of sugar. A reader phoned me, not about the missing sugar, but to ask if I was sure the flour quantity was correct, also 45ml. Yes, that’s quite right. The mixture is quite runny before baking though. The recipe states bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown and set. I bake it for 55 minutes and it’s perfect. Worth a try.

Focus on Local

A little gem hidden in Alberton, just behind The Lemon Tree on Ascot Road, La Joie Café is a coffee shop and functions venue with a lapa and a pool.

New owner since March, Joan de Lange, is friendly and will go out of her way to make your visit there just perfect.

I asked her what La Joie is famous for and she said her pancakes have been compared to a well-known pancake house in Mpumalanga, now that’s not bad. The lemon meringue pie is also delicious. You won’t find a cheaper breakfast, Snoepie brekkie – one egg, two bacon, one toast and tomato for, wait for it – R15! Also a German breakfast – German Vienna, two eggs, two toasts and tomato R25.

Pop in for breakfast, lunch, tea/ coffee and cake and enjoy the tranquil surroundings in a lovely garden area. There’s also a kiddies play area.

La Joie Café is available for birthday parties, baby showers, children’s birthdays, private functions and even small engagements and intimate weddings and can seat about 50 people. There’s a quaint gift shop adjacent and opening hours are Tuesday to Friday 08:00 to 16:00, Saturday 08:00 to 14:00 and Sunday 09:00 to 13:00. For private functions opening hours can be arranged.

A really lovely local spot. Definitely worth a visit. Phone 083 556 6196 or visit: www.lajoiecafe.co.za

Fifty per cent off

Yes, that’s what many of the sales are offering. Make use of this and buy gifts. I’m anxiously awaiting the Woolies sale and already have my list prepared with what I’d like to purchase. Can’t be much longer!

New products

Bokoma Oat-bix, made with oats not wheat, 550g at about R29.95. I liked it and it makes a nice change from Weet-bix.

Woolworths has a new line, Chocolate Enrobed Biscuit Selection, 31% cocoa, 150g R39.95 or the Luxury Selection Packet also 31% cocoa, 200g for R36.95. What could be nicer with tea?

Bouquet of the Week

Friedrich Kruger gives a bouquet to the manager, by the name of Zita, of the Nu-Metro at The Glen. “He made it possible for me and my family to view The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 3D. I was given four free tickets about 18 months ago to any Nu-Metro cinema at any time. To my dismay the tickets stipulated that they were for 2D movies only. After explaining to him how excited my grandson was at the possibility of seeing this movie he kindly converted these tickets for this show. It was good to see that he did this without any extra conditions and complications. Once again, I think he deserves the highest praise for his patron relationship attitude.”
