Kenilworth teacher wins top maths award at National Teaching Awards

The MEC said teachers are the light that guides the children, the champions of their dreams, and the architects of a better tomorrow.

Kenilworth Secondary School teacher Menzi Mlungisi Ngobese excelled at the 24th Annual National Teaching Awards ceremony at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways on October 1.

He received the accolade of excellence in teaching mathematics, putting Johannesburg South and Central on top.

In his speech, the Gauteng Education, Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Matome Chiloane, addressed his teacher, saying he had reflected on how teachers had impacted his life and wanted to express his gratitude.

“You stood at the front of the classroom daily, bringing an energy that filled the room with possibility. You shared not just facts from textbooks; you opened my eyes to a world of critical thinking and exploration.

“You taught me that learning goes far beyond those four walls. It lives in every question I dared to ask, every mistake I made and every success we celebrated together. You didn’t just hand me knowledge; you gave me the tools to be curious, resilient and confident.

“Your lessons were more than just information; they were lifelines. When the world felt overwhelming or confusing, your belief in me helped me find my way. You recognised my potential even when I didn’t see it in myself, and I am grateful for that.

“Today, I stand in this room filled with people like you, those who dedicate their lives to shaping minds, igniting the flame of curiosity and nurturing the future. I stand on this podium, in this room, as the Gauteng MEC of Education.”

He then said he had realised something: every teacher in the room was his favourite teacher.

“It is a true honour and a source of immense pride to be here today for the 24th Annual National Teaching Awards. This special occasion celebrates our teachers’ excellence, dedication and transformative influence. As Henry Adams once said: ‘The influence of a teacher can never be erased’. We are shining a spotlight on teachers whose hard work has significantly impacted our learners’ lives, continually raising the standard of education in Gauteng,” he said.

He continued to say in a constantly changing world, teachers are more critical than ever.

“I know you know this, but I would like to remind you. You are not only equipping learners with the knowledge they need to succeed academically, but you are also empowering them with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges. Through your guidance, learners are not just passing exams; they are learning resilience, empathy and the value of perseverance.

“This event is a celebration of excellence, but it is also a reminder of the collective responsibility we all share in advancing education. Our schools are more than learning institutions; they are spaces where dreams are nurtured and futures forged. And none of this would be possible without the unwavering commitment of our teachers. As we continue transforming the education sector in Gauteng, we look to you, our teachers, to lead the way. You have already made a significant impact, and we trust your passion and commitment will continue to shape the minds and futures of our learners,” he noted.
