Madrash holds an annual Arbor Day in Bassonia

Learners are encouraged to observe the delicate beauty and complexity of nature.

The Madrasah Nahrul Hayah and Nahrul Hayah Pre-school in Bassonia held their annual Arbor Day on September 5 and 6.

The principal of the institute, Ml Ahmed Bhyat, said: “At our school, we refer to Arbor Day as Abu Talha Day, in honour of a companion of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who donated his prized garden upon hearing the verse: ‘You will not reach true piety until you spend of that which you love.’ (Quran 3:92).”

The learners participated in planting mini ‘lollipop’ trees along the boundary walls of the school property. This initiative aimed to inspire the learners to become proactive contributors to their community, society, and environment, a value deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam.

The Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encourage environmental stewardship.

The Prophet said: “If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (sadaqah) for him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

By engaging in this activity, the learners were encouraged to reflect on the greatness of Allah through His creation, observing the delicate beauty and complexity of nature.

Madrasah Nahrul Hayah is an afternoon Islamic school catering to learners from Grade R and older, while Nahrul Hayah Pre-school operates during the mornings with a strong foundation in Islamic principles.

Ml Ahmed Bhyat noted, “Did you notice our mini tree on Comaro Street, on the corner of Meerkat Avenue? If you spot it, take a snap, post it on Instagram, and tag us @nahrul_hayah. Let’s celebrate our community spirit.”
