Men In Deed Book Club engages learners in reading competition

The learners will showcase their passion for books and reading when they compete for top honours.

The Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation is hosting the Funda Mzantsi Championship, a reading competition in which book clubs compete against each other.

Local NPO Men In Deed has a book club and has qualified to represent Region F at the provincial level.

Men In Deed adopted Kibler Park Secondary School as a beneficiary, and the top five learners will fly the flag in the competition with the Men In Deed Book Club. They will partake in an impromptu book reading, a book review and analysis, a spelling bee and a debate.

The competition ran for three consecutive days, August 28-30, where the learners will participate and showcase their skills to qualify for the provincials.

The Funda Mzantsi programmes enhance language skills. In the correctional centres, the programmes help offenders during their examinations.

Founder and chairperson Theophellous Chabalala said, “We aim to qualify all candidates because we all have brilliant minds and the support of the school learners and the community.”

Additionally, the organisation appeals to the community to donate sanitary pads to support needy learners. The organisation aims to ensure no learner misses school due to problems accessing essential hygiene products.
