Calvary College learners excel at National Olympiad

Learners were encouraged to participate to stimulate their interest in geography and test their understanding of it in an enjoyable way.

Calvary Christian College along with 123 other schools nationally participated in the South African National Geography Olympiad (SANGO).

The goal of the SANGO competition is to promote an interest in the world and a passion for geography.

Additionally, it appears to reinforce the geography curriculum in South Africa and increase readiness for sending a team to the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo).

A total of 1 568 learners participated in the Olympiad. Phillip Ngorora, the geography teacher at Calvary Christian College enrolled 24 learners from grades 10 to 12 for this year’s competition.

Upon completion of the Olympiad, one of the Grade 11 learners described the questions as ‘challenging but fair.’

The Calvary learners did extremely well with Bonginkosi Sikhonde (Grade 11) ranked in the top 15% and Mbulaheni Mbali (Grade 12) in the top 10%. The top achiever is Madimetsa Chochoe who was ranked in the top 5% in the country.

The principal, Willem Barkhuizen said: “Well done to our learners.”
