The day saw parents, City of Joburg officials, teachers, and learners gathered at the school’s hall to witness the start of the beautiful collaboration of the city with the Joburg Student Council members.

The student council’s mission is to represent the youth of the city and bring out issues and suggestions that are specific to high school students. The student council also learns about local governance, including who is in charge of what and how political choices are made.

As the junior mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Kamohelo Malikane said: “My priorities lie in making sure that every student in the city has a voice and a platform to express all different issues that aren’t just inherent to their communities but also the students in general.

“I realised that there’s a large shift that’s occurring among us as students as we all focus on abilities to make money. To curb this issue, I plan on organising business seminars and incubations that will foster the culture of entrepreneurship.”

Malikane’s portfolio also includes encouraging sports participation in schools as he wants students to realise that there’s more to sports than just being physically active.

“I believe that a lot of schools in the city don’t have access to adequate sports resources such as stadiums and fields and this is one of the issues that I’m planning to resolve,” said Malikane.

South Africa faces an issue where youth can’t articulate themselves in interviews. Mbalenhle Dlamini, City of Joburg Student Council speaker is working to address this issue by integrating public speaking and debate in schools within the city.

“As my portfolio states, I will ensure that schools debating and public speaking are accessible to learners. I have already introduced the Asikhulume (let’s speak) project where we go to schools to establish debating.”

Dlamini also plans to ensure accountability within the City of Joburg.

“The city has a lot of projects planned and I will make sure that these projects are implemented,” said Dlamini.
