City of Johannesburg wins SALGA – Gauteng Municipal Audit Award

The city reminds its residents to adjust their budgets to accommodate the tariff increases.

The City of Johannesburg emerged victorious at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) – Gauteng Municipal Audit Awards, winning an award for municipal grants for metropolitan municipalities at 85%.

Johannesburg hosted the second SALGA-organised municipal awards on July 5.

The award effectively means the city is on the right path because it spent 85% of the grants it received from the National Treasury during the 2022/23 financial year.

The sole purpose of the grant is for capital projects intended to fast-track service delivery on a large scale for the benefit of residents.

These awards, initiated by SALGA Gauteng, are hosted annually and focus on municipal performance across the province. The city was counted among the municipalities whose clear focus is to deliver services for their inhabitants.

The city’s group chief executive officer, Tebogo Moraka, said, “We take this victory seriously as the city because we value the grants given to us for capital projects. These projects are at the centre of the city’s service delivery programme to improve the lives of the people of Johannesburg.

“We remain upbeat with a positive spirit as we begin the financial year 2024/25, clear and focused on delivering services for more than six million residents of Johannesburg.”

The city’s approved budget of R83.1b, effective from July 1, is more proof of its commitment to service delivery. It reminds residents that it implemented tariff increases, meaning ratepayers must adjust their budgets to accommodate them.

The city calls on all ratepayers to commit to paying it. It assures that revenue collection is dedicated to service delivery to improve the quality of life in the world-class African city.
