WATCH: Abomama Bendawo’s feeding scheme brings hope to children in need

Abomama Bendawo organisation asks for community support as the organisation receives no funding from the government.

Abomama Bendawo, a non-profit organisation founded in 2019, provides a feeding scheme to more than 150 children in Freedom Park despite the challenges faced by the organisation.

The feeding scheme programme runs during school holidays as most children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to have something to eat when schools are closed.

“Freedom Park is one of the communities that has the most disadvantaged people. The situation is bad and the feeding scheme provided by Abomama Bendawo plays a huge role in these children’s lives,” said Nceba Ndube, Ward 119 committee member for public safety.

The organisation also empowers women with basic artisan skills such as sewing, baking, catering, handcrafting, informs women about the effects of GBV within their households, and helps child-headed households and grannies by giving them food parcels.

According to Nomusa Magubane, founder of Abomama Bendawo, the NPO was formed to help curb the issue of poverty, unemployment, alcohol, and drug abuse in Freedom Park.

Abomama Bendawo comprises 30 unemployed women who are determined to make a difference in their community despite the challenge of having no jobs.

Magubane mentioned how it is hard for the organisation to keep operating without funding as sometimes they don’t cook due to not having food.

“We need help. We are running the feeding scheme from our own pockets and it’s not easy at all,” said Magubane.

Abomama Bendawo is pleading with anyone who can assist with donations in the form of food for the feeding scheme, clothes, and school shoes.

Another challenge faced by the organisation is not having a shelter they can use to continue serving the less vulnerable.

According to Magubane, the organisation is currently running its feeding scheme in an open veld, and this becomes an issue during the rainy season as they can’t serve the children.

Magubane said; “We would appreciate it if we can get a sponsor to help us with a container and a fence.”

Abomama Bendawo passed heartfelt gratitude to Freedom Park’s local spaza shops, Albert Recycling, and Sophia Rotary NPO for their continued support of the organisation.
