Turffontein tutor Karabo Kekana offers free online study help

All he wants is to change their lives to get a better education.

Traditional healer and tutor Karabo Kekana (21) from Turffontein not only helps learners online to study for free; he also touches them spiritually.

Born in Limpopo, Kekana is a Forest High School alumnus who matriculated in 2021.

He said his journey to help others started in his Grade 12 year.

“I was not doing well in mathematics and physics. That was when my school took us to a camp. I met my childhood friend from another school. He motivated me to do better.

“A cross-night camp in Soweto followed where physics was the main focus. My teacher asked for a volunteer to teach others, I found myself raising my hand to take the offer. The learners and teachers were in awe of my teaching style. This was the start of a good thing in me,” he said.

Although Kekana obtained distinctions, he was not accepted into a higher learning institution because throughout the year his marks were not good.

Knowing his capabilities, he decided to help learners struggling in mathematics and physics.

“I spoke to one of the principals in our area and was able to help the learners. I sometimes went to their homes to teach them. During that period I saw it fit to launch a platform to reach more learners,” he said.

YouTube was the preferred platform Kekana ventured into, especially his channel – Sci-Masters.

“At first I dropped about four videos for English as a subject. It was not working as there were minimum interactions and views.

“However, it was not long before people asked me to continue posting the videos. I also got offers to motivate learners, with some asking me to be their teacher.

“The best part is that when I teach I connect with them spiritually; I’m not the conventional tutor. The feedback I get motivates me because most of my online learners improve their marks drastically,” noted Kekana.

He also mentioned that through this his YouTube initiative, Khanyisani Youth Programme, was born. He teaches learners on weekends. He also tried to get sponsors so that learners could be fed during these interactions. He said he wants to change their lives to get a better education.

To date, he has 10 000 subscribers and more than 500 000 views on YouTube @SCI – Masters.

Regarding his other calling – being a traditional healer – Kekana said he knows how to tap into the learners spiritually. He said that helps a lot of learners to understand his teaching methods.

“To them, I’m like a parent, a brother or a friend. I am still young and it is much easier for them to relate to me.
“We also help learners to apply to universities and bursaries. We have the information they need.

“To those who didn’t do well, we encourage you to upgrade. Through my encounters with learners, I have deduced that most of them are spiritually gifted and that’s why I encourage them to pray every time we are studying. They love it,” he said.
