Online dating sites spark concern for Brackendowns SAPS

Brackendowns SAPS warn users of online dating sites, especially women, following reported incidents of crimes related to internet dating.

Brackendowns SAPS has learnt with serious concern reports of sexual assault from users of online dating sites, especially women.

The station warns the public not to fall victim to criminal elements while using these sites.

According to Sergeant Lindile Moloi of Brackendowns SAPS, this is after the station registered several cases of sexual assault from women who were enticed while on a dating site.

“Should a user ever decide to meet someone in person, they must make sure that they have their own transport. They should trust their instinct and thoroughly do background checks on the person they intend to socialise with. They should be weary of sharing their location to avoid being victimised,” she said.

She advised that participants should reject any request for money and should always meet those they communicate within public spaces.

Before meet-ups, Moloi said users should always inform their family members and loved ones about their date and that they must be sober-minded at all times. “Avoid suspicious online profiles.”
