Water leaks in Robertsham irk residents

Millions of clean water is wasted daily in Robertsham.

Southern Courier recently reported on four water leaks in Robertsham, especially in Jasper Road and Harry Street.

Although some leaks were fixed, the one at the corner of Jasper Road and Harry Street seems problematic. Back-and-forth communication between the Southern Courier, residents and Johannesburg Water yield no results.

These leaks started last year, however, from this particular one, clean water was still flowing day and night.

Vera Nortman, who alerted the Southern Courier to the situation, said she doesn’t know what else to do because nothing is being done.

“In our area, we currently don’t have water. Yet, there has been water flowing every day for months now. No one cares. It is the same leak we report every time and has never been repaired correctly. Millions of litres of clean water are running down the street. Johannesburg Water has not attended to the leak,” she said.

Southern Courier has contacted Johannesburg Water at least 10 times on the same issue. These are some of the reference numbers furnished to them: 404862532, 404692361, 4044844780 and 404521501.

In May, Nolwazi Dhlamini from Johannesburg Water said, “The relevant depot confirmed that a Johannesburg Water team will attend to the leak over the weekend.”

It was, however, not fixed.

Last month spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said, “A Johannesburg Water technical team visited the site and upon investigation, they found a leaking valve.

“However, the technical team did not have the correct fittings at the time to repair that valve, and the fittings had to be ordered internally. The repairs will be completed by June 21.”

As of July 11, the water was still flowing at the corner of Jasper Road and Harry Street.
