JRA employee dies on duty, another injured

JRA extends its sincere condolences to Mathebula's family and colleagues.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) announced the passing of Mondile Mathebula (34), a dedicated road maintenance worker.

He was fatally injured in a drunk driving incident on June 30.

On Sunday morning at around 11:20, while cleaning a kerb inlet on Vickers Road at George Goch, Mathebula and his colleague, Majahanyana Moyozi (44), were struck by a Toyota Hilux van driven by an intoxicated driver. The vehicle, carrying an overloaded number of passengers, lost control and hit the workers, resulting in severe injuries.

Despite immediate medical attention, Mathebula succumbed to his injuries because of severe blood loss. Moyozi received medical treatment and was discharged the following morning.

JRA CEO, Zweli Nyathi, expressed profound sorrow, “We are devastated by the loss of Mathebula. Our thoughts are with his family and colleagues during this difficult time. This tragic incident highlights the critical need for enhanced road safety measures.

“He was a valued team member and our hearts go out to his family and colleagues during this difficult time.”

The MMC for Transport, Kenny Kunene, added: “This incident underscores the dangers faced by our road maintenance workers. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mathebula’s family and colleagues.”

The MMC has emphasised the seriousness of this matter, saying they are committed to ensuring that justice is served.

“Follow-up actions with the SAPS will be closely monitored to uphold accountability on behalf of the family and the JRA.

“Despite JRA and its officials taking all reasonable safety precautions, including wearing high visibility clothing and using proper signage and traffic control measures, reckless driving and a lack of consideration for road workers continue to put them at risk.

“JRA is appealing to motorists to be more vigilant and considerate of road workers,” he said.

Some simple ways to keep everyone safe:

• Maintain a safe following distance and avoid speeding near roadwork zones.

• Obey the temporary speed limits displayed.

• Pay close attention to work zone signs and instructions.

• Avoid distractions like cellphones while driving.

• Be patient and avoid weaving in and out of traffic near work zones.

The JRA management, along with regional and city-wide depot managers, visited Mathebula’s family on July 1, to offer condolences and support. They also arranged counselling services for the affected employees.

JRA is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities, and charges of drinking and driving, reckless driving, and culpable homicide were filed against the driver.

The agency urges the community to prioritise road safety and responsible driving to prevent such tragic incidents.

“Road maintenance workers play a vital role in keeping our roads safe and functional. It is the responsibility of all road users to drive safely and consider the well-being of those working on our roads,” said Nyathi.
