WATCH: Naturena continues to create opportunities for its youth

Now that the elections are over, work will start.

Ward 119 Public Safety portfolio, together with Tushiya Home Based Care Exposure NPO and Ezindala, joined forces with Sanca and the Department of Social Services’ School Intervention Unit in hosting a Mother to Child Dialogue in Naturena.

Portfolio member Nceba Ndube said the dialogue aimed at addressing the social ills of crime and drug abuse by the youth. It was time for men to hand over the baton to mothers by giving guidance to the youth.

Local artists and craftsmen were also invited to showcase their work to inspire youth.

“The youth was requested to randomly choose any mother within the audience and tell her of his/her challenges. Each dialogue was 20 minutes. This exercise was for the youth to open up to a person who is not their biological mother as it seems to be easier for any child to open up to strangers. This would also bring back the African culture of ‘it takes a village to raise a child’.

“After the dialogue session, they were individually randomly called up to share their experiences and tabled solutions. We also realised we will invite social workers to the next programme we plan to have throughout the ward.

“Out of this exercise, we realised interesting items of interest and will be addressed. One of the most important was boredom because of a lack of resources and recreational facilities within Naturena.

“A local community radio station called Naturena Community Radio Station was introduced to our audience. The radio station is aimed to be run by our youth. One artist named Roxanne and a few youths will work on the radio’s logo. We are still trying to find a suitable wall for that mural.

“We also have realised our youth need to create their own jungle gym through our assistance, and that will make them take pride and ownership of what they have created.

“A weekend market was also suggested for those that would like to sell their artwork among others.

“The newly elected CPF deputy chairperson, Phumeza Benzi, was chosen to be a replacement mother to a group of girls that were asked to come up with a wish list and they immediately did that,” explained Ndube.

Some items on their wish list include dance classes, a beauty pageant, and a netball court. It was also announced that the work will start immediately after the elections.
