Fun for children at Jackson informal settlement

Children had fun while learning from different speakers who came on the camp.

Jesu o Bitsa Bana Christian children’s holiday camp took place at Miracle Daycare, Jackson informal settlement, from July 10 to 15.

Although it was one of the coldest weeks, they were determined to have fun while learning and playing.

Michelle Rawbone from the camp said they met each day at Tracey Tsikwa’s Miracle Daycare with between 40 and 60 children and teachers who are part of TLC.

“We opened the day with prayer and a Bible story, then breakfast. On Monday we had Ashley from the Niche Market in Walkerville, teaching children about organic vegetable farming. They had fun planting their own vegetables. When we finished, it started to snow again.

“Then some learning and then lunch, followed by awesome playtime. Tuesday we welcomed the Johannesburg Parks Department and they taught the children about littering and the four R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink.

“Wednesday we welcomed Cause for Paws where they talked about keeping healthy pets. They gave the dogs some treats. The children nearly knocked Wisdom down from Cause for Paws in their eagerness to feed the dogs.

“Friday we had Sergeant Mnguni with all her trainees. And then Felix the firefighter bunny came to teach the children about being safe in a fire and how to get out of the shack/house.

Volunteers flanked Michelle Rawbone from Jesu o Bitsa Bana and Tracey Tsikwa from Miracle Daycare.

“On Saturday the children presented a short show of what they learnt, singing and dancing to the entertainment of the parents.

“We would like to thank all those who took the time to talk to the children. It is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Moja Meats for donating the viennas, to Manny’s Salvage for the cash donations and Inginwe Foods in Henley on Klip. All donations were so appreciated. We will be doing another fun week during the next school holiday,” she said.
