GiG group gives back to community

Annual outreach by GiG group brings warmth to Queenshaven.

In a heartwarming display of community care, the seniors of the God is Great (GiG) group paid their annual visit to Queenshaven Retirement Village.

GiG is comprised of individuals who knit, crochet, and collect warm clothing items, and undertakes this initiative every winter to deliver much-needed warmth to a selected old age home. Despite their limitations, GIG is dedicated to making a difference in their community.

This year, due to restrictions, the number of members allowed at Queenshaven was limited. A small delegation of four individuals represented the group and had the privilege of delivering the donated items.

Accompanied by the nursing staff, they were able to hand over warm clothing to every resident in the wards. The recipients expressed their gratitude, and the GiG group left feeling blessed, grateful, and inspired to continue their efforts next year.

In another recent community initiative, Alida Jooste, a social worker, presented a valuable session on online and cellphone safety to the aftercare programme.

“Recognising the influence and exposure that children have to information through their devices, it is important for parents to know what a crucial role they play in guiding their children in navigating the advantages and disadvantages of social media and the internet,” said Alida.

Parents were urged to take joint responsibility with their children for their online safety by regularly monitoring their online activities and the individuals they interact with.

“In an age where vulnerability is high, it is essential to prioritise their protection,” she said.
