An ordinary-looking house has been discovered as a multimillion-rand drug lab in Kibler Park.
Police launched a manhunt after the discovery was made by a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team on Friday afternoon.
Gauteng SAPS Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit acted on intelligence and conducted four hours of surveillance before approaching the premises.
“Drug manufacturing equipment, chemicals, and an end product suspected to be mandrax were discovered. No one was found on the premises, but investigations to trace the perpetrators are underway,” he said.
Mthombeni said: “The kind of machines which have been found here are big. There are also end products which we found coded as star, boss, and bentley. So you could see even the names they are using are big names.”
“This kind of operation isn’t discovered by accident. We acted on reliable intelligence and followed it up,” adds Mthombeni.
Speaking at the scene, Ward 125 Councillor Matsobane Sekhu said the discovery of the drug lab, hidden in an ordinary-looking house, is one of the community’s biggest concerns.

“We are here at this house, but if you speak to the community, I’m sure they will point out other houses suspected of dealing drugs. I am so grateful for today’s discovery because we have been raising our concerns,” he said.
Sekhu said this should not end today and expressed his wish for regular action.
“Sometimes we get information from neighbours and people who suspect criminal activities, but for us to be successful in ending crime, we need the police to act on these tip-offs and make arrests,” adds Sekhu.
