Guide on acceptable waste at Pikitup’s integrated waste management facilities

Residents are urged to visit www.pikitup.co.za for more information.

Pikitup, the waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, has 42 waste management facilities, formerly known as garden sites.

Muzi Mkhwanazi, spokesperson at Pikitup said it has come to their attention that some residents seem not to be fully aware of the different kinds of waste that can be disposed of at such sites. This has resulted in residents being turned away from these facilities for trying to dispose of waste that is not acceptable at such sites.

Annoyed and frustrated residents in turn would make frantic calls to Pikitup to find out what is accepted or not acceptable for disposal at these sites.

The information below seeks to assist, clear the confusion and empower residents in 42 waste management facilities.

These sites are operational from Monday to Sunday and from 08:00 to 17:00.

Waste acceptable at the site:

• Light garden waste/refuse (maximum five plastic bags)

• Paper, cardboard and plastics

• Cans, e-waste and vehicle oil

• Glass

“Residents should also note that the integrated waste management sites are self-service sites. Pikitup employees are not obliged to help you offload your refuse.

“Old furniture, couches, fridges, microwave ovens, broken television sets, and old mattresses are considered bulky waste and these must not be disposed of at this site.

Pikitup has a Free Bulky Waste Service to assist residents with the disposal of large items such as these. To use Free Bulky Waste Service, residents must call Pikitup on 087 357 1068 and request the service.

“This service is provided to ensure that people loitering around the sites will not obtain items of value and as such will not harass residents that use the sites.

“Garden service providers are only allowed to dispose of one load per car or van at the garden site. If garden service providers have more loads to dispose of, they must dispose of such waste at the Robinson Deep landfill site,” he said.

Residents are encouraged to visit www.pikitup.co.za to locate a garden site nearest to them.
