Head instructor of Cobras Shotokan Karate wins medal in the USA

The Cobras Shotokan Karate club train on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 17:30 – 18:30 at Ascot Mews Conference & Wedding Venue, 19 Heidelberg Road, New Market Alberton.

Sensei Laurent Gaston-Bellegarde, the head instructor of the Cobras Shotokan Karate Club from Alberton, recently returned from the USA where he won his 10th medal at the World Union of Karate-do Federations World Championships.

The championship was held in Fort Lauderdale from July 4 to 7.

Laurent won a bronze medal in the veteran men’s 51-60 under 75kg kumite division.

This event was attended by just over 1 800 athletes and all divisions, from children to veterans, was well contested.

Laurent, who has been training karate for 34 years and teaching for 27 of those years, has competed at nine world championships over the past 18 years and won a total of 10 individual and team world championship medals.

He is an inspiration to all his students and fellow competitors in South Africa and has proven he has true dedication and commitment to this martial art and how to perfect it to a world-class level.

Laurent continues to train toward his next world championship event, where he has the gold medal in his sights. This will take place in Dundee, Scotland, in July next year
