Help DEOPR continue serving its everyday purpose

After taking over from an already existing entity, DEOPR asks for public's donations to continue with its services to the elderly people.

The Directorate Enforcing Older Persons Rights (DEOPR) caring facility is in dire need of funds to sustain the facility and get the investigation division fully functional.

In September 2021, DEOPR saw the need to intervene for humanitarian reasons after learning that the Johannesburg Association For The Aged (JAFTA) was closing its doors after 60 years of being a home for the aged.
According to Hennie Els, JAFTA closed its doors because of financial constraints.

DEOPR later took over the facility and the care of the elderly residents who were still present on the property, enabling the creation of DEOPR caring facility at that time.

“We aim to enforce older persons’ rights in terms of the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006, while we ensure that a bond remains between older persons, children and relatives and that the facility is indeed enforcing the rights of the elders,” said Els.

Due to the property’s substantial maintenance demands and the small number of residents, the institution has a difficult time affording the monthly costs.

DEOPR urges the public to assist with donations for the following:

Maintainance: paint, corrugated iron sheets, cement, ceiling boards, tiles, compost for gardens, plants, seed and bulbs, LED lights, garden tools and power tools.

Standby generator: due to the ongoing load-shedding and power outages, they plead for assistance with a standby generator so they could have electricity for lights and life support systems.

Upgrade kitchen and dining area: to be able to effectively serve 220 people they need to upgrade the kitchen and dining room facility. This includes the replacement of walk-in fridges as the present fridges are old and in need of maintenance and repairs as well as two industrial dishwashing machines, a fury blender 1.8l and on fury spare jug.

Tumble dryers currently being used.

Upgrade laundry: the laundry and equipment need an urgent upgrade as the current equipment does not serve the purpose and the machine is extremely old (1952 model).

Repair electric fence: they are in need to repair the existing electric fence and installation of infrared cameras linked to the security control room.

How funders could benefit

Chefs of the DEOPR.

• Cash contributions can be claimed back from SARS as they can issue a section 18(1)(a) certificate.

• Bequests are exempted from Estate Duties Sec 4(b) of Estate Duty Act.

• Big funders would also be able to place an advertising board on the main fence and their details will go onto the ‘donors’ board that is visible to visitors and the public.
