Andries Els doing better

The South African Cystic Fibrosis Association (SACFA) celebrates CF Gene Day on May 25.

This is a way of raising awareness for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) as well as a way to raise funds for much needed medical equipment to help treat CF patients.

The RECORD recently did an article about Andries Els and his life with CF. Els, a resident from the South of Johannesburg who suffers from CF, is living his days to the fullest and with the help of new medication, it is made easier.

The newspaper recently caught up with Els to find out how it’s going since starting the new medication as well as the way forward for him.

Els was diagnosed with CF at a young age and at 34 years also struggles with diabetes.

During his previous interview, Els was still in hospital but he has since been released and is back working with dogs to help with training.

“Since starting the new medication things have been going good. My lung function has increased from 56% to 74% in the last few weeks,” said Els.

There was also recently a golf day that was hosted to help with fund-raising to ensure he can get the money to go to Argentina for treatment. About R50 000 were raised by the family.

The next fund-raiser planned by Els and his family is a wine auction.
