Petcare 101: Never believe that animals experience less suffering than humans

As Be Kind to Animals Week ends, everyone is encouraged to treat animals in a manner that they would like to be treated.

Dog fighting is a vicious combat sport in which dogs have been bred, groomed, and prepared to attack. These dogs are fighting against each other for the enjoyment and profit of spectators.

Fights last between one and two hours and finish until one of the dogs cannot continue. Dog fights can sometimes finish without a winner; for example, the dog’s owner may call the fight.

Dog fighting is illegal because it is an organised criminal act and cruel practice.

According to Charmain Southon, human beings arrange dog fights because of their human-interest benefits and they are cruel to animals.

“Imagine if you, as a human, were put in a similar situation where you must fight someone until they have no power to defend themselves. How would you feel?” Southon said.

Furthermore, pet owners tend to put their dogs on a chain so they cannot move around, without being aware that dog chaining presents substantial hazards to a dog’s physical and psychological well-being.

Dogs are naturally social creatures who require human or animal connection. Chaining it may cause it harm individuals because when dogs are unable to flee from perceived or real threats, they might become violent.

Important things to remember:

Take your pet for a check-up

Once they had all their initial shots, they would not need to go for check-ups as often. After their initial vaccines, they should be scheduled for check-ups and vaccination top-ups at least once a year.

Take your dog for training

Training boosts its self-esteem, stimulates the mind and develops the human-animal link.

Microchip your pet

A microchip offers your pet a permanent identity and increases the chances of them being returned to you if they go missing.
