Meyersdal resident Andries Els lives to the fullest with cystic fibrosis

Meyersdal resident Andries Els suffers from cystic fibrosis (CF) but is making every day count.

CF is a genetic disorder that causes damage to the lungs, the digestive system and other organs. It can lead to other repertory illnesses like bronchiectasis, hemoptysis and, in extreme cases, respiratory failure.

Andries was diagnosed with CF at 10 months, but he has always followed his dreams and passion. He has tried his hand at the game management industry, as well as training dogs and personnel for anti-poaching operations.

“We all live with the knowledge that today might be our last day. That’s why it’s important to live life to the fullest,” said Andries.

Andries has recently received good news about a new medication being developed in Argentina to help fight CF and improve his lung function, prolonging the effects of the disease.

With his medical aid only paying part of his medical costs, he has to raise R450 000 within the next 12 months to ensure he can go for the treatment.

Andries started a Given Gain donation drive to raise funds.

He recently got engaged to Chenique Steyn. They met when he attended a dog training course in Plettenberg Bay.

“We got engaged one weekend while visiting her parents in Sannieshof in the North West. The idea was to stop next to a sunflower field, which is her favourite flower, to ask her to marry me. As luck would have it, on the way to Sannieshof there was not one such field. Finally, on our way back, we got a sunflower field and I asked her to marry me,” said Andries.

In his spare time, he started a blog on Facebook called Us and CF, which focuses on his life with CF.

To help Andries, his family is planning a golf day at the Glenvista Golf Course on May 5. For more information call Piet Els on 082 445 3402.
