Box for Hope saves lives at Angels Baby Sanctuary

Anne had always been a volunteer in baby homes, which led her to open Angels Baby Sanctuary.

Founder and chairperson of Angels Baby Sanctuary in La Rochelle Anne Ebrahim confirmed that for every three abandoned babies, only one receives shelter.

With the Box of Hope, they want to give such babies a chance at life.

She has been actively involved in saving abandoned babies since 2014 and they have installed the Box of Hope in January on their premises, 273 Johannesburg Road.

The box helps to give life after birth to mothers in crisis. Rather than abandoning your baby, Anne encouraged the troubled mothers to bring the baby to them.

“We want to save the abandoned babies as they do at Door of Hope with the Box of Hope where mothers in crisis can put their babies in. When I told people about it, lots of them came on board to assist, including Grafika Digital that did the design and signage of the box and Steve Dwarika from Guardian Angel Security, who protects the box.

“The box is fairly new, no babies yet. We have a challenge of people unnecessarily opening it, and when opened it triggers an alarm. We need people to respect it because it is for a good cause. We can’t also put a blanket in the box as it will be stolen; however, there is a mattress mounted in it,” explained Anne.

She said mothers must not despair whenever they encounter problems. They can come to her or visit Life Choices at 140 Albert Street, Rosettenville, for guidance.

“There’s always a safe place where mothers can go if they can’t handle the stress,” she said.

They are home to 12 babies and need donations of nappies, especially sizes three and four.

“We use up to 200 nappies per week, so we are in dire need of nappies.

“People must also take note that with Covid-19 regulations easing up, we are open to taking volunteers and people who want to donate. All Covid-19 protocol are still followed.”

Anne encouraged people to sign a petition to legalise baby savers in South Africa, which provide a safe alternative to unsafe baby abandonment.
